PuTTY is a terminal emulator application which is used to connect to server as a client. It act as a client for the SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP computing protocols. PuTTY word has no specific meaning itself though TTY is used as a small for term in unix. Originally, it was developed for windows but recently it has been used with most of the OS like Mac OS, Mac OS X,Symbian and Windows Mobile. PuTTY was written by Simon Tatham primarily and it is currently maintained by beta software.

There are 3 versions have been released i.e 0.58, 0.59, 0.60. Version 0.58 was released in April 2005 which includes saveral features including improved Unicode support, for international characters and right-to-left or bidirectional languages. Where as Version 0.59 was released in January 2007. It implemented new features like connection to serial ports, local proxying, sports SSH and SFTP speed improvements, changes the documentation format and has several bugfixes.The 0.60 version implements three new features and some bugfixes.

Applications of PuTTY

* PSCP – It is a SCP client i.e. command-line secure file copy.
# PSFTP – It is a SFTP client i.e. general file transfer sessions much like FTP.
# PuTTYtel – It is a Telnet-only client.
# Plink – It is a command-line interface to the PuTTY back ends.
# Pageant – It is a SSH authentication agent for PuTTY, PSCP and Plink.
# PuTTYgen – It is a RSA and DSA key generation utility
# pterm – It is a standalone terminal emulator.
